Arterial stiffness refers to the loss of arterial elasticity and compliance, commonly measured using pulse wave velocity or augmentation index. In cardiometabolic medicine, arterial stiffness serves as an important surrogate marker for cardiovascular disease risk and is frequently elevated in patients with diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. Increased arterial stiffness is associated with enhanced cardiac workload and reduced coronary perfusion, making it both a consequence and contributor to cardiovascular disease progression.
