The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a logarithmic ratio calculated as log(triglycerides/HDL cholesterol) that serves as a marker of atherogenic potential and cardiovascular disease risk. This index correlates with small, dense LDL particle concentration and has been shown to be particularly useful in assessing cardiovascular risk in patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. AIP values above 0.24 are generally considered to indicate increased atherogenic risk, while values above 0.11 suggest intermediate risk.
