C-reactive protein

An inflammatory biomarker produced by the liver that is elevated in systemic inflammation and used to assess cardiovascular risk.

Full Definition

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase reactant synthesized by hepatocytes in response to inflammatory cytokines, particularly interleukin-6. In cardiometabolic medicine, high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) measurements are used to assess low-grade chronic inflammation associated with atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease risk. Normal hs-CRP levels are below 1.0 mg/L, with levels 1.0-3.0 mg/L indicating moderate risk and above 3.0 mg/L suggesting high cardiovascular risk. CRP levels can be influenced by acute infections, medications, and lifestyle factors, requiring careful interpretation in clinical practice. The biomarker has been incorporated into cardiovascular risk calculators and helps guide preventive therapy decisions.
