EMPA-REG OUTCOME
Also written as: EMPA-REG OUTCOME — Empagliflozin Cardiovascular Outcome Event Trial in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients
Pivotal cardiovascular outcomes trial that first demonstrated cardiovascular benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors.
Full Definition
EMPA-REG OUTCOME (Empagliflozin Cardiovascular Outcome Event Trial in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients) was a landmark randomized controlled trial involving over 7,000 patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. The trial demonstrated that empagliflozin significantly reduced cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and non-fatal stroke compared to placebo. Most notably, the trial showed a dramatic 38% reduction in cardiovascular death, fundamentally changing the diabetes treatment paradigm and establishing SGLT2 inhibitors as cardioprotective agents.
Usage
Usage note: Often considered the trial that initiated the paradigm shift toward cardioprotective diabetes medications.
