Lipoprotein particle number refers to the direct measurement of the actual count of lipoprotein particles in blood, typically assessed using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy or ion mobility techniques. This differs from traditional cholesterol measurements, which only quantify the cholesterol content carried by lipoproteins. Particle number provides superior cardiovascular risk prediction because it reflects the actual number of potentially atherogenic particles that can enter the arterial wall. Small, dense particles carry less cholesterol per particle, so particle number often exceeds cholesterol-based estimates of atherogenic burden. LDL particle number (LDL-P) has shown stronger associations with cardiovascular events than LDL cholesterol in many studies. This measurement is becoming increasingly important in precision lipid management and cardiovascular risk assessment.
