NOD

Also written as: NOD — New-Onset Diabetes

New-onset diabetes, referring to diabetes diagnosed during hospitalization or acute illness. Important distinction from established diabetes for treatment decisions.

Full Definition

New-onset diabetes (NOD) refers to the first diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, typically occurring during hospitalization for acute illness, cardiovascular procedures, or in the perioperative period. NOD can represent true new diabetes development or previously undiagnosed diabetes revealed by stress-induced hyperglycemia. This distinction is clinically important because NOD patients may have different prognoses and treatment requirements compared to those with established diabetes. In cardiometabolic medicine, NOD following acute coronary syndromes or cardiac procedures is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, requiring careful glucose management and long-term follow-up.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from stress hyperglycemia which may be transient.

In Context

  • "NOD was diagnosed following the patient's myocardial infarction with glucose levels persistently above 200 mg/dL." — Hospital discharge summary
  • "Patients with NOD require endocrinology follow-up within 2-4 weeks of discharge." — Clinical protocol
