The Veterans Affairs Diabetes Trial (VADT) was a randomized controlled trial that investigated whether intensive glycemic control compared to standard control would reduce cardiovascular events in military veterans with type 2 diabetes. Similar to ACCORD, VADT did not demonstrate cardiovascular benefits with intensive glucose control in the primary analysis, but post-hoc analyses suggested potential benefits in younger patients with shorter diabetes duration and less baseline cardiovascular disease. The study contributed to the evidence base supporting individualized glycemic targets based on patient characteristics and comorbidities.
