Full Definition

Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) is a class of lipoprotein particles produced by the liver that primarily carries triglycerides from the liver to peripheral tissues. In cardiometabolic disorders, particularly insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, VLDL production is increased due to enhanced hepatic fatty acid synthesis and impaired triglyceride clearance. Elevated VLDL levels contribute to the characteristic diabetic dyslipidemia pattern of high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and small dense LDL particles, significantly increasing cardiovascular disease risk through atherogenic mechanisms.
