A sex-specific mathematical index combining waist circumference and triglyceride and HDL levels to assess visceral fat accumulation.

Full Definition

The visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a novel cardiometabolic risk marker that integrates anthropometric and laboratory parameters to estimate visceral adipose tissue accumulation and function. It incorporates waist circumference, body mass index, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol in sex-specific formulas. VAI correlates strongly with visceral fat measured by imaging techniques and serves as a predictor of cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance. Values above 2.52 in males and 2.23 in females suggest visceral adipose dysfunction and increased cardiometabolic risk.
