Full Definition

A two-dimensional echocardiographic parameter used to assess right ventricular systolic function by measuring the percentage change between end-diastolic and end-systolic ventricular areas. Calculated as (end-diastolic area - end-systolic area)/end-diastolic area × 100. Normal values typically exceed 35%. This measurement is particularly important in cardiothoracic surgery where right heart function may be compromised by surgical manipulation or underlying pathology.
