Full Definition

Fractional shortening (FS) is an echocardiographic parameter that quantifies left ventricular systolic function by measuring the percentage change in left ventricular internal dimension during systole. It is calculated as (end-diastolic dimension - end-systolic dimension)/end-diastolic dimension × 100. Normal fractional shortening ranges from 25-45%, with values below 25% indicating systolic dysfunction. In cardiothoracic anesthesia, fractional shortening provides a simple, reproducible assessment of cardiac contractility that helps guide perioperative management decisions, particularly regarding the need for inotropic support or mechanical circulatory assistance.
