IABP

Also written as: IABP — Intra-aortic Balloon Pump

Intra-aortic balloon pump; mechanical device supporting cardiac function.

Full Definition

An intra-aortic balloon pump is a mechanical circulatory support device consisting of an inflatable balloon positioned in the descending aorta. The balloon inflates during diastole to increase coronary perfusion and deflates during systole to reduce afterload and improve cardiac output. IABP is commonly used in high-risk cardiac surgery patients and those with cardiogenic shock to provide temporary hemodynamic support.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenate 'intra-aortic' when spelled out; timing (1:1, 1:2) should be specified in documentation
