Leukocyte depletion involves the use of specialized filters in the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit to remove white blood cells and reduce the systemic inflammatory response associated with cardiac surgery. The technique aims to minimize the release of inflammatory mediators, reduce complement activation, and decrease postoperative complications such as acute lung injury, renal dysfunction, and cognitive impairment. Leukocyte depletion filters are typically incorporated into the arterial line of the bypass circuit and can remove up to 99% of circulating leukocytes. This technique is particularly beneficial in high-risk patients undergoing complex cardiac procedures or those with preexisting inflammatory conditions.
