mitral annuloplasty
Pronunciation: an-yu-lo-PLAS-tee
Surgical technique to repair mitral valve regurgitation by reshaping and supporting the mitral annulus with a prosthetic ring or band.
Full Definition
A valve repair procedure that addresses mitral regurgitation by placing a prosthetic annuloplasty ring or flexible band around the mitral valve annulus to restore normal geometry and competence. The technique may be complete (360-degree) or partial, rigid or flexible, depending on the pathology. Annuloplasty is often combined with other repair techniques such as leaflet resection, chordal transfer, or artificial chords. Benefits over valve replacement include preservation of left ventricular function, reduced thrombogenicity, and improved long-term outcomes. TEE is essential for assessing repair adequacy before weaning from CPB.
Usage
Usage note: Specify ring type and size when documenting; distinguish from other mitral repair techniques in operative reports.
