myocardial stunning

Temporary cardiac dysfunction following reperfusion after ischemia.

Full Definition

Myocardial stunning refers to a reversible reduction in myocardial contractility that occurs after restoration of blood flow to previously ischemic myocardium. This phenomenon is commonly observed after cardiopulmonary bypass or following acute coronary syndrome. The stunned myocardium shows reduced contractile function despite adequate perfusion and absence of necrosis, typically recovering over hours to days with supportive care.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from hibernating myocardium, which is chronic adaptation to reduced perfusion

In Context

  • "Post-bypass myocardial stunning was managed with inotropic support and mechanical circulatory assistance." — Clinical assessment
