A pressure-volume (PV) loop is a graphical plot that displays the relationship between left ventricular pressure and volume throughout a complete cardiac cycle, providing comprehensive assessment of cardiac performance. The loop's shape and position reveal information about preload, afterload, contractility, and ventricular compliance. Key parameters derived from PV loops include stroke work (loop area), end-systolic pressure-volume relationship (contractility index), and end-diastolic pressure-volume relationship (compliance). In cardiothoracic anesthesia, PV loop analysis helps optimize hemodynamic management, assess the effects of interventions, and guide decision-making regarding mechanical support devices.
