pulmonary hypertension

Elevated pressure in pulmonary circulation affecting cardiac surgery management.

Full Definition

Pulmonary hypertension is elevated pressure in the pulmonary arteries (>25 mmHg at rest) that significantly complicates cardiac surgery. It may be primary (idiopathic) or secondary to left heart disease, lung disease, or chronic thromboembolic disease. Anesthetic management requires careful hemodynamic monitoring, avoiding triggers that increase pulmonary vascular resistance, and having pulmonary vasodilators readily available. Severe pulmonary hypertension increases perioperative mortality and may require mechanical circulatory support.
