retrograde autologous priming

Technique to reduce prime volume in CPB circuits by displacing crystalloid prime with patient's blood in a retrograde manner.

Full Definition

A blood conservation technique used during cardiopulmonary bypass setup where the standard crystalloid prime in the CPB circuit is partially or completely displaced with the patient's own blood by retrograde flow through the venous line. This process reduces hemodilution, decreases transfusion requirements, and minimizes the inflammatory response associated with CPB. The technique involves connecting the venous cannula to the CPB circuit and allowing retrograde flow to displace prime fluid before initiating full bypass. RAP is particularly beneficial in pediatric patients, patients with low body weight, or those where blood conservation is critical.
