Retrograde cerebral perfusion (RCP) is a cerebral protection technique used during aortic arch operations that involves delivering cold, oxygenated blood through the superior vena cava while the patient is in deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. The technique provides some degree of cerebral metabolism support and may help flush embolic debris from the cerebral circulation. RCP is typically performed at low pressures (15-25 mmHg) and flow rates to avoid cerebral edema while maintaining some nutritive flow to brain tissue.
