Point-of-care viscoelastic test used to assess hemostatic function during cardiac surgery.

Full Definition

Thromboelastography (TEG) is a viscoelastic hemostatic assay that provides real-time assessment of clot formation, strength, and dissolution. In cardiothoracic anesthesia, TEG guides perioperative coagulation management by measuring parameters like R-time, K-time, alpha angle, and maximum amplitude. This allows for targeted therapy with blood products, antifibrinolytics, or reversal agents rather than empirical treatment based on conventional coagulation tests.

Usage note: Often confused with ROTEM, which is a different viscoelastic testing system.
