Full Definition
A ventricular assist device is a mechanical pump that helps maintain circulation in patients with severe heart failure. VADs can support the left ventricle (LVAD), right ventricle (RVAD), or both (BiVAD) and may be used as a bridge to transplantation, bridge to recovery, or destination therapy. These devices require specialized anesthetic management due to altered hemodynamics and anticoagulation requirements.
