Full Definition

A simple, reproducible echocardiographic parameter that assesses right ventricular systolic function by measuring the distance the lateral tricuspid annulus moves toward the cardiac apex during systole. TAPSE is obtained using M-mode echocardiography in the apical four-chamber view, placing the cursor through the lateral tricuspid annulus. Normal values are typically ≥17mm, with values <16mm suggesting right ventricular dysfunction. This measurement correlates with right ventricular ejection fraction and provides prognostic information in various cardiac conditions. TAPSE is particularly useful in cardiac surgery for assessing right heart function before and after procedures that may affect the right ventricle.
