aortic dissection

A life-threatening condition where blood separates the layers of the aortic wall, creating a false lumen.

Full Definition

Aortic dissection occurs when blood penetrates through a tear in the intimal layer of the aorta, separating the layers of the aortic wall and creating a false lumen alongside the true lumen. Classifications include Stanford Type A (involving the ascending aorta) and Type B (involving only the descending aorta). Type A dissections require emergency surgical repair due to the risk of rupture, cardiac tamponade, or stroke. The surgical approach typically involves replacement of the ascending aorta and may include aortic root or arch replacement depending on the extent of dissection.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish between Stanford and DeBakey classification systems in documentation.
