aortic root replacement

Surgical replacement of the entire aortic root including the valve, sinuses, and ascending aorta.

Full Definition

Aortic root replacement is a complex cardiac procedure that involves replacing the aortic valve, aortic sinuses, and proximal ascending aorta as a single unit. This operation is indicated for conditions such as aortic root aneurysms, acute aortic dissection, or combined aortic valve and root pathology. The procedure may involve composite graft replacement (Bentall procedure) or valve-sparing root replacement techniques. Root replacement requires reimplantation of the coronary arteries into the new graft, making it technically more challenging than isolated valve replacement.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from isolated aortic valve replacement, which does not involve the root structures.

In Context

  • "The patient underwent aortic root replacement with reimplantation of both coronary arteries." — Operative summary
  • "Aortic root replacement is indicated for patients with root aneurysms exceeding 5.5 cm in diameter." — Clinical guideline
