Full Definition
Hemodilution refers to the decrease in the concentration of red blood cells and other blood components that occurs during cardiac surgery. This typically results from the addition of crystalloid or colloid solutions to prime the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit, effectively diluting the patient's blood. While moderate hemodilution can be beneficial by reducing blood viscosity and improving microcirculation, excessive hemodilution may impair oxygen delivery and require blood transfusion.
Usage
Usage note: Not to be confused with hemolysis, which is cell destruction rather than dilution.
