Measurement of cardiac metabolic function by comparing arterial and coronary sinus lactate concentrations.

Full Definition

Myocardial lactate extraction assesses cardiac metabolism by measuring the difference between arterial lactate concentration and coronary sinus lactate concentration, expressed as a percentage of arterial lactate. Normal hearts extract lactate from arterial blood for energy production, while ischemic or failing hearts may produce lactate, resulting in negative extraction ratios. This measurement provides valuable information about myocardial viability and adequacy of oxygen delivery during cardiac surgery.

Usage note: Express as percentage and specify sampling technique when reporting extraction ratios.
