myocardial stunning

Temporary reduction in cardiac contractility following reperfusion after a period of ischemia.

Full Definition

A condition characterized by prolonged but reversible left ventricular dysfunction that occurs after restoration of blood flow to previously ischemic myocardium. Unlike myocardial infarction, stunning involves viable tissue that gradually recovers function over hours to days. In cardiac surgery, stunning commonly occurs after cardioplegic arrest and reperfusion, requiring careful hemodynamic management and sometimes temporary mechanical support during the recovery period.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from permanent myocardial damage or hibernating myocardium.

In Context

  • "The patient exhibited myocardial stunning post-operatively, requiring inotropic support for 48 hours." — Post-operative note
  • "TEE revealed global hypokinesis consistent with myocardial stunning rather than acute ischemia." — Anesthesia assessment
