Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive monitoring technique that uses light wavelengths between 700-1000 nanometers to measure tissue oxygen saturation. In cardiovascular anesthesiology, NIRS is primarily used for cerebral oximetry to detect cerebral desaturation events during cardiac surgery. The technology can also monitor renal and somatic tissue oxygenation. NIRS values typically range from 55-75% in healthy adults, with decreases below baseline indicating potential ischemia requiring intervention.
