Global Longitudinal Strain, a measure of overall left ventricular function representing the average longitudinal deformation of all myocardial segments.

Full Definition

Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS) is a quantitative parameter that measures the average longitudinal shortening of the left ventricular myocardium during systole. Expressed as a negative percentage, normal GLS values typically range from -18% to -24%. GLS is considered more sensitive than ejection fraction for detecting early myocardial dysfunction and has strong prognostic value in various cardiac conditions. This parameter is particularly useful for detecting subclinical dysfunction in patients receiving cardiotoxic chemotherapy, early heart failure, and subtle regional wall motion abnormalities.

Usage note: Always express as a negative value; more negative values indicate better function.
