Full Definition

Hyperkinesis refers to exaggerated myocardial contraction characterized by increased wall motion and systolic thickening beyond normal parameters. This compensatory mechanism often occurs in myocardial segments adjacent to areas of dysfunction (compensatory hyperkinesis) or in response to increased contractility from catecholamine stimulation. Hyperkinetic segments demonstrate vigorous inward motion during systole with marked wall thickening, often appearing as hyperdynamic contraction on echocardiography. While hyperkinesis may represent normal physiologic response to exercise or stress, it can also indicate compensatory mechanisms in the setting of regional dysfunction or early signs of catecholamine excess. Global hyperkinesis may suggest hyperdynamic circulation states.
