Full Definition

The interventricular septum (IVS) is the muscular partition that divides the left and right ventricles of the heart. In cardiac imaging, septal thickness is routinely measured in diastole, with normal values typically ranging from 6-11 mm. The septum contributes significantly to left ventricular systolic function through its contractile motion toward the left ventricular free wall. Abnormalities include septal hypertrophy (as seen in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), septal defects (ventricular septal defects), and motion abnormalities such as paradoxical septal motion seen in right heart pressure overload or post-cardiac surgery. Septal assessment is crucial in diagnosing various cardiac conditions and planning interventional procedures.
