Mitral inflow pattern refers to the characteristic Doppler flow profile across the mitral valve during diastolic filling, consisting of early (E wave) and late (A wave) components. The E/A ratio, deceleration time, and isovolumic relaxation time provide information about left ventricular diastolic function and filling pressures. Normal young adults typically show E/A ratios of 1.0-2.0, while aging and diastolic dysfunction alter these patterns. Pseudonormalization can occur in advanced diastolic dysfunction, making tissue Doppler assessment essential for complete evaluation.
