paradoxical septal motion

Abnormal movement of the interventricular septum away from the left ventricle during systole, often seen after cardiac surgery.

Full Definition

Paradoxical septal motion describes the abnormal movement pattern of the interventricular septum, where it moves toward the right ventricle during left ventricular systole instead of the normal inward motion. This finding is commonly observed following cardiac surgery, particularly after cardiopulmonary bypass, but can also occur in right heart volume overload, constrictive pericarditis, or left bundle branch block. While it may affect calculated ejection fraction measurements, it does not necessarily indicate impaired left ventricular function when other parameters are normal.
