Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is a nuclear medicine imaging technique that uses gamma rays to create three-dimensional images of cardiac perfusion and function. In cardiac imaging, SPECT is commonly combined with stress testing to evaluate coronary artery disease by comparing blood flow patterns at rest and under stress. The technique involves injection of radiopharmaceuticals that are taken up by viable myocardium in proportion to blood flow. SPECT imaging is particularly valuable for detecting ischemia and assessing myocardial viability in patients with known or suspected coronary disease.
