Strain imaging is an advanced echocardiographic technique that quantifies myocardial deformation during the cardiac cycle, providing sensitive markers of cardiac function beyond traditional parameters. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) is the most clinically validated parameter, with normal values typically greater than -18%. Strain imaging can detect subclinical myocardial dysfunction in various conditions including chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity, infiltrative diseases, and early heart failure. This technique uses speckle-tracking technology to analyze myocardial motion frame-by-frame throughout the cardiac cycle.
