Full Definition

Myocardial stunning is a clinical syndrome characterized by prolonged but reversible mechanical dysfunction of viable myocardium following an ischemic episode, despite restoration of normal coronary flow. The phenomenon occurs due to transient metabolic and contractile impairment caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury, with recovery of function occurring over hours to weeks. Stunning is distinguished from hibernating myocardium by the presence of normal or near-normal perfusion at rest. Common causes include percutaneous coronary intervention, cardiac surgery, stress testing, or spontaneous coronary spasm. Recognition is important to avoid unnecessary interventions in viable myocardium.
