Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) is a simple, reproducible echocardiographic measurement that quantifies the systolic displacement of the tricuspid annulus toward the cardiac apex. TAPSE is measured in the apical four-chamber view using M-mode echocardiography, with the cursor placed at the lateral tricuspid annulus. Normal values are typically >17 mm, with values <16 mm suggesting right ventricular systolic dysfunction. TAPSE correlates well with right ventricular ejection fraction and provides prognostic information in various cardiac conditions including pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and congenital heart disease. The measurement is angle-dependent and may be limited in patients with significant tricuspid annular calcification or regional wall motion abnormalities.
