T2 mapping

Cardiac MRI technique that quantifies myocardial edema and inflammation by measuring tissue T2 relaxation times.

Full Definition

T2 mapping is an advanced cardiac MRI sequence that provides quantitative assessment of myocardial tissue characteristics, particularly useful for detecting acute myocardial injury, inflammation, and edema. Unlike qualitative T2-weighted imaging, T2 mapping generates parametric maps with specific millisecond values for tissue relaxation times. Normal myocardial T2 values typically range from 50-55 ms at 1.5T, with elevated values indicating tissue edema from various causes including acute infarction, myocarditis, or transplant rejection.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify the magnetic field strength (1.5T or 3.0T) as normal values differ between platforms.
