Full Definition

Aschoff giant cells are pathognomonic multinucleated cells found in rheumatic heart disease, specifically within Aschoff nodules. These cells contain 5-15 nuclei arranged in a distinctive caterpillar or ribbon-like configuration with prominent nucleoli. They represent a fusion of activated macrophages and are considered a hallmark histologic feature for diagnosing acute rheumatic carditis. The presence of these cells, along with other inflammatory components, helps pathologists confirm rheumatic involvement of cardiac tissue.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize 'Aschoff' as it is an eponym. Distinguish from other types of giant cells in cardiac pathology.
