Fatty deposit that accumulates in arterial walls, causing narrowing and potential blockage of blood vessels.
Full Definition
A complex lesion consisting of lipid deposits, inflammatory cells, smooth muscle cells, and fibrous tissue that forms within the intimal layer of arteries. These plaques develop over time through a process involving endothelial dysfunction, lipid accumulation, and inflammatory responses. Vulnerable plaques may rupture, leading to thrombosis and acute cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction or stroke.

Usage note: Use 'atherosclerotic plaque' rather than simply 'plaque' when context requires specificity.
