Hyaline arteriolosclerosis represents a pathologic process characterized by the thickening of arteriolar walls due to deposition of homogeneous, eosinophilic (pink) proteinaceous material in the vessel wall. This condition is most commonly associated with diabetes mellitus and hypertension, representing a form of small vessel disease that affects the microvasculature. The hyaline material consists primarily of plasma proteins that have leaked through damaged endothelium and basement membrane thickening, resulting in luminal narrowing and impaired tissue perfusion.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from hyperplastic arteriolosclerosis, which shows smooth muscle cell proliferation rather than hyaline deposition.
