Congenital coronary anomaly where a segment of epicardial coronary artery runs intramurally through the myocardium.

Full Definition

Myocardial bridging is a congenital coronary anomaly in which a segment of an epicardial coronary artery takes an intramyocardial course, becoming 'bridged' by overlying myocardial fibers. This most commonly affects the left anterior descending artery. During systole, the bridged segment may be compressed by the surrounding myocardium, potentially causing ischemia. While often asymptomatic, myocardial bridging can be associated with chest pain, arrhythmias, and rarely sudden death, particularly in young athletes. The condition is typically diagnosed through coronary angiography or CT angiography, showing characteristic systolic compression of the affected vessel.
