Myxomatous degeneration is a common pathological process affecting cardiac valves, particularly the mitral valve. The condition involves accumulation of mucopolysaccharides (glycosaminoglycans) within the valve leaflets and chordae tendineae, leading to thickening, redundancy, and potential prolapse. Histologically, there is expansion of the spongiosa layer with mucopolysaccharide deposits and disorganization of collagen fibers. This process is the underlying pathology in mitral valve prolapse syndrome and can lead to valve regurgitation or, rarely, rupture.
