ST-elevation myocardial infarction

Also written as: STEMI — ST-elevation myocardial infarction

Type of heart attack characterized by complete blockage of a coronary artery, shown by elevated ST segments on ECG.

Full Definition

A severe form of acute coronary syndrome caused by complete occlusion of a major epicardial coronary artery, resulting in transmural myocardial necrosis. The condition is diagnosed by characteristic ST-segment elevation on electrocardiography, along with clinical symptoms and elevated cardiac biomarkers. STEMI requires immediate reperfusion therapy, typically primary percutaneous coronary intervention or thrombolytic therapy. Pathologically, it presents as transmural infarction extending from endocardium to epicardium.

Usage

Usage note: Always hyphenate when written in full; STEMI is acceptable abbreviation after first use.
