Subendocardial hemorrhage

Bleeding into the tissue layer immediately beneath the endocardium, often associated with acute ischemia or trauma.

Full Definition

Subendocardial hemorrhage refers to extravasation of blood into the tissue space located immediately beneath the endocardial surface of the heart chambers. This finding is commonly associated with acute myocardial ischemia, particularly in the setting of severe coronary artery disease, but can also result from trauma, coagulopathy, or sudden changes in intracardiac pressure. The subendocardial region is particularly vulnerable to ischemic injury due to its location at the end of the coronary perfusion gradient. Histologically, subendocardial hemorrhage appears as extravasated red blood cells within the interstitial spaces and can be accompanied by myocyte necrosis. The presence and extent of subendocardial hemorrhage can provide important information about the acuity and severity of cardiac injury.
