ASCVD risk enhancers
Additional clinical factors that increase cardiovascular risk beyond traditional risk calculator variables and may influence treatment decisions.
Full Definition
ASCVD risk enhancers are clinical factors, biomarkers, or imaging findings that confer additional cardiovascular risk not captured by standard risk prediction algorithms. These include family history of premature ASCVD, chronic inflammatory conditions, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, elevated biomarkers (hs-CRP, Lp(a)), and abnormal imaging findings (coronary calcium, ankle-brachial index). Risk enhancers help reclassify intermediate-risk patients to higher risk categories, supporting more aggressive preventive interventions.
Usage
Usage note: Use plural form 'enhancers' when referring to the category; hyphenate 'risk-enhancing' when used as compound modifier.
