Full Definition
Lipoprotein(a), abbreviated as Lp(a), is a lipoprotein particle consisting of an LDL-like particle covalently bound to apolipoprotein(a). Lp(a) levels are primarily determined by genetics and remain relatively stable throughout life, unlike other lipoproteins that respond to diet and medications. Elevated Lp(a) levels (>50 mg/dL or >125 nmol/L) are associated with increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and calcific aortic stenosis. Current lipid-lowering therapies have minimal effect on Lp(a), though newer therapies specifically targeting Lp(a) are in development.
