Full Definition

Thrombolytic therapy involves the administration of fibrinolytic agents that activate the body's natural clot-dissolution mechanism to recanalize thrombotically occluded coronary arteries. Common thrombolytic agents include tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), streptokinase, and reteplase. This treatment is primarily used in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) when primary percutaneous coronary intervention is not immediately available. Successful thrombolysis can restore TIMI 2 or 3 flow and salvage myocardium, but carries risks of bleeding complications including intracranial hemorrhage. The effectiveness diminishes with time, making prompt administration within the first few hours of symptom onset crucial for optimal outcomes.
