Bleeding Academic Research Consortium (BARC) criteria represent a standardized classification system for bleeding events in cardiovascular clinical trials, ranging from Type 0 (no bleeding) to Type 5 (fatal bleeding). This system was developed to address the inconsistency in bleeding definitions across cardiovascular studies and to provide clinically meaningful categories that correlate with patient outcomes. BARC Type 1 bleeding is clinically non-significant, Type 2 is clinically significant but not requiring intervention, Type 3 is further subdivided into 3a (requiring medical intervention) and 3b (requiring transfusion or causing hemoglobin drop ≥5 g/dL), Type 4 is procedural bleeding related to coronary artery bypass grafting, and Type 5 is fatal bleeding. The BARC classification has been widely adopted in cardiovascular device and drug trials, particularly those involving antithrombotic therapies, and provides a standardized framework for safety assessments.
