A diagnostic evaluation using imaging modalities like dobutamine stress echocardiography, cardiac MRI, or nuclear scintigraphy to assess whether areas of myocardium with reduced contractility are hibernating or stunned (viable) versus irreversibly damaged (non-viable). This assessment guides clinical decisions about revascularization procedures, as viable myocardium is likely to improve function after restoration of blood flow, while non-viable tissue will not recover. The distinction is crucial for determining optimal treatment strategies in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy.
